Synthetic Training Environment World Server (STEWS)

Achieving the U.S. Army’s Synthetic Training Environment vision for One World Terrain will require a World Server that provides a curated database of data layers that can be streamed into the virtual environment at run time. As part of STE research and development, Bohemia Interactive Simulations and TerraSim developed the Synthetic Training Environment World Server (STEWS) as a key component of the overall solution to meet the U.S. Army’s One World Terrain requirements. 

STEWS streams whole-earth terrain layers from the Cloud to VBS STE, VBS Blue IG and other runtime engines. It is a geospatial database for storing and serving GIS data through open APIs to visualization and simulation systems. STEWS is built on multiple, proven open source technologies.

As part of our work with the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies, BISim implemented the STEWS API which simplifies a client application’s interactions when querying and requesting 3D assets from the STEWS server.  While the STEWS database storage scheme already provides open interfaces to GIS layers such as elevation, texture and vector data, BISim extended the API to support 3D assets in any desired formats, including FBX, OBJ, and OpenFlight.
