Tactical Engagement Simulation System (TESS)

The ICE TESS solution is an advanced system of components that simulates tactical weapons actions and effects in a live training environment, providing virtual Force-on-Force (FoF) weapons system training without using live ammunition. Realistic weapons engagements are provided using MILES and geometric pairing. The advanced aircraft instrumentation system receives and transmits real-time data from the aircraft 1553 mux data bus and weapons processor. TESS interfaces electronically with the aircraft weapons system to provide a training mode, weapons mode, and a simulated weapons inventory. The advanced aircraft instrumentation system receives and transmits real-time data from the aircraft 1553 mux data bus and weapons processor. TESS interfaces electronically with the aircraft weapons system to provide a training mode, weapons mode, and a simulated weapons inventory. Aviation TESS provides an instrumented training capability on fixed or mobile ranges. When adapting TESS to fixed ranges, such as permanent Combat Training Centers (utilized in the US, UAE, UK, Egypt and Singapore), network interoperability is achieved by integrating data via an existing Exercise Control (EXCON) system, using telemetry antenna systems for scalable Radio Frequency (RF) coverage and live feed transmissions across multiple sites. Critical mission data is telemetered to Observer/Controllers in real-time, then displayed and recorded on the EXCON ground station equipped with the SMODIM Tracking, Analysis and Recording (SMOTARTM) advanced software suite. Mission data is recorded live and can also be extracted from the SMODIM’s onboard compact flash memory card for playback and After Action Review (AAR). Mobile (Home Station) ranges are easily deployed using a mobile telemetry network and telemetry repeaters to extend training range capabilities. A core benefit of Aviation TESS is the capability to monitor and track instrumented players with constructive, instantaneous high fidelity AARs, providing constructive feedback for enhanced training and rapid absorption of key lessons learned. Critical mission data is recorded for computer playback and can be quickly assessed using the SMOTARTM software that displays player position/location over 3D geographical maps with terrain and aircraft elevation. Player icons are displayed in 3D with color-coded team assignments and editable call signs. Aircraft gun-tape video is collected and imported with Pilot and CPG audio. Recorded data is time stamped and synchronized with aircraft gun-tape video, then further synchronized with weapon trigger events and weapon engagement scoring. Weapon engagements are adjudicated using Probability of Hit/Probability of Kill (Ph/Pk) algorithms specific to each weapon and player type. Real-time data includes player position/location, attitude/orientation, weapon events, heading, velocity, sensor heading, sight azimuth, Aircraft Survivability Equipment (ASE) status, Real-Time Casualty Assessment (RTCA), and other performance characteristics.
